Microsoft Intern - The Selection

It was  a typical KGPian afternoon in April. The last day of the easiest and most peaceful semester of our lives at KGP, the 4th semester. Basically, we had finished with our exams and preparing for the journey back home. I found myself in Akki's room one evening playing FIFA. After 4 straight defeats, 3 of which were goalless, I felt a bit low. Sensing the oppportunity Akki played his card to cheer me up, "Hey ! Dont worry... Intern mei tu macha dega :D ". Little did he knew, he touched my weak nerve, and made me gloomier and darker.
The fight for intern was now on...

May 2016 :
I sat at my home and could feel the pressure of intern piling up. It was not easy to behave relaxed, but I tried to stay away from nonsenses. GeeksForGeeks had become a demi-god creation in the batch of people with superior levels of intelligence. And here I was, still unaware of my career path ahead. There was a motivation of off-campus intern on some sparse occasions while some days were dark. But I held my nerve and moved on. I had to relax.... I relaxed.

June 2016 :
This month found me in KGP, the scene of action after a few weeks. I felt the competitive air quite intensely once here and that made the alarms go off. I started coding and revising old stuff. But basically all the time, I was fighting within. To be or not to be... To research or to industry-fy. I had this constant rebel within me which served no good. But I had to move on some track. I started off for both. I started coding for my industry aspirations and started reading papers and publications of profs I was targetting for a research based intern. It was a terrible one month that flew. All I figured out in the end was that I was lagging behind steeply as compared to my batchmates for an industry intern and I had not a very commendable CG to apply for a premier college for research. So basically, I had closed all paths for myself. This was the harsh reality. I had to face it. But I would not fall down to petty and cheap methods to getting success by mugging up stuff somewhere. I had confidence within me.
" I had the knowledge, I had the skill.
Even if I didn't specifically prepare (or rather mug), I had the confidence to move ahead still. "
I guess that's what is important in the end.
Contrary to the gloomer side of the subject matter, the month ended with me being in Germany though. :P

July 2016 :
I was in Germany. There was no reason to be tense and bring upon the subject of intern on this holy and pious trip (:P). I enjoyed the week there and had enough experiences for quite some time. I missed my international flight. Was alone in Delhi Airport for a day. Travelled alone to Frankfurt. Travelled alone from Frankfurt to Leipzig (via train bitch) and alone, post midnight, to my hotel. This incident made me more confident in myself and played a huge role in reaffirming my trust in myself. I was ready to risk it. If it wasn't for me to get a cool Day 1 intern, I was ready to face the consequences. I will not succumb to mediocrity and dishonour. I was filled with ecstacy and a thrill to perform. I had to perform.
Soon, the semester started. I found myself back in KGP, with trained and well groomed batchies. There was thrill as companies started pouring in. I saw MS, GS, Tower, AmEx and others and I couldn't help applying. But I had brought with me, from my 2 months back home, confidence and a will to take risks. I was now taking risks. I had mentally shortlisted Microsoft as the only company I could sustain in my ego from those on Day 1 ( I know this is weird, but yeah. I couldn't have been happy with others... ). I carefully flunked the GS paper and the DE Shaw paper got flunked accidently. So I was even. I was shortlisted only for Microsoft for the group fly after I solved 2 questions (Though I believed I had solved all 3. One test case is all that matters sometimes...:P).

Day 0 :
Visited the Microsoft PPT and couldn't have been more happy with my decision. Microsoft was my best chance for Day 1 (It was my only chance though. :P ) and I wanted to make the most out of it. In the group fly, I solved a question and provided an algorithm for the second and to my amazement, was shortlisted for interview besides 35 people on Day 1. I checked the clock, it was 00:20 am on the 6th of August. I had to report for the interview at 6 am on the same date. I loved my sleep. But something needs to be lost to attain something. I slept only for 4-ish hours. :(

Day 1 (Pre-interview) :
Waking up at 5 am reminded me of constant struggles I indulged in during the past 2 years for health and fitness. This struggle was no less. I got ready in formals, with a RED tie (which soon became popular) and my coat (which was vestigial, ofcourse) and reached the interview control room by 6 am. We sat there hopelessly till 7 am and then there was a roll call and some people were called for interviews after 7:30 am. Soon people began disappearing and reappearing. They went with tense faces and returned with mixed emotions. In the words of a worldly saint free from desires, this scene could've been compared with a circus. I sat there soon indulging deep in thought and moving away from material pride. It was soon 9 am... and then 10 and 11. But I was still not called for my interview. I sat in a place and observed people. People with emotions, people with aspirations and people with purpose. I lamented on this shallow being of humans and started becoming more melancholy and philosophical. I had to prevent that to enter my selfish intern-seeking body... But I can't. It was impossible to separate 2 miscible fluids in the air of the mental ether. I was gloomy, I was philosophical, I was hungry. No good signs for an interview. I ate some snacks and hoped for ATLEAST an interview. Finally it was at 11:30, that I got my turn. Broken with fatigue and hunger, I still made my way to the interview room. I found myself in. I knew I won't have a second chance...

Day 1 (The interviews) :
I found myself infront on the interviewer. After greeting and basic conversation about the room and environment, he glanced at my resume. He asked about my task at KRSSG which I explained to him in a most delicate way. He looked satisfied and happy. He asked me further steps I intend to take in my role at KRSSG which I explained to him clearly. Impressed with my frank and honest attitude, he asked me a question on graphs. It was incredibly easy. I told him an algorithm straight away and he asked me to write the code on paper. I was stunned. I had not practised this. I started rambling code on the paper and it looked all unorganised and dirty. He asked me to re-write it clearly. I carefully copied my code in a decent manner and he read it. There was a bug there. I cleared it. And then there were more... and more. I felt ashamed as I had brandished ACM ICPC on my resume. He asked me to write a test function to check if my code works. I wrote it fine enough and he concluded the interview. I was not sure how it went. I had screwed it up badly. I had to wait. I resolved in my mind that I will not let the opportunity slip if I'm selected further.
I was selected further...
Round 2 found me facing another interviewer who asked for my resume again. He glanced through it and asked some questions on it. Next I had to face another written question. I immediately figured out a way to do it. I asked follow-up questions and I proceeded to writing the code. I started writing it on paper and wrote it with relative ease. He followed up with more questions on heaps, priority queues and scheduler systems. He asked me OOP concepts like Polymorphism, Operator Overloading (with code) and resemblance of some concepts with the real world. He made to code one or two more questions and I did them with increasing confidence. I was now sure that I have now been greased by practice and could solve and write whatever I am asked to. I answered all his questions and I think he looked satisfied. I came out. Whatever the result may be, I had discovered my confident self from within. Even if I'm not selected now, I knew, I could do something great with my life. I was happy and content.
Then a recruiter came forward to me and asked me to return back after lunch for the 3rd round. I was overwhelmed. I was filled with joy that I still had a chance. I came hurtling down and decided to return to my hall. But I met Akki, Vishal and Goel at Subway. They all had got offers. Akki and Vishal from Goldman Sachs. Goel from Microsoft. I told Goel about my interview. He told me to hold my nerve as this could be the final deciding interview and be true and just to your self, just as PP Akash told me during my melancholy hits that morning. (I'm indebted to both for bringing out the confident self within me... :) ). I was ready for the next round.
Round 3. This was easy. There were 2 questions. One on linked lists and the other on 2-D arrays and I solved then both with rapid speed. The interviewer was happy and asked me general HR questions like Why Microsoft etc... I answered whatever came from within and expressed my desire in the most outspoken fashion. He looked content and asked me if I had some questions for him. I had many. I asked all of them. He answered them profusely for about 15-20 minutes. I was content and ended the interview. I was getting optimistic vibes.

I came out and washed my face. I approached the placecom incharge and asked her to check my status. She went in and came out with a message of greatest happiness magnitude.
" I was selected for IDC. "
I felt accomplished.
I felt responsible.
It felt good.

I came down the stairs and met Goel, Vishal, Sahil, Vaishal and Akki again in Subway. All had offers. Sahil and Vaishal got offers from DE Shah Shaw. They will live together happily, again. I called my mom, my dad and started getting calls. Someone had posted on my timeline. It was a beautiful moment. I reached my hall and was congratulated by all I met. I logged on to fb and there were congratulatory messages and posts. It was great. Words can't hold the emotional sanctity of those moments. They got saved forever somewhere in the confusing paths of the mind maze only to be unravelled sometimes later.
But I wasn't that happy. I was waiting for an official confirmation. I waited till 7 pm. Then came the big moment. The results of Day 1. That was it. The end of a struggle... Beginning of a new chapter.
But more than anything I learnt, you just have to keep faith in the divine and most importantly in your own self. "Faith can move mountains..." I realized that.

Then it was all pomp. We dined together (MS Hall wale) at MS Hall canteen. Played games. Went for a walk. Slept a deep and relaxed sleep for quite some time.

There was only one regret - MS is not a word in my dictionary anymore. It is either MS (Microsoft) or MS Hall... :P

Thus was my experience for Microsoft Intern selection process. Now I'm open to deliver newer and more tested and tried funda to keep up with my reputation as "Funda God" :P.

//

I wish all my friends who got selected on Day 1, heartiest congratulations.
To all those who didn't, Best wishes ! You'll all certainly get to beautiful places too...

Thanks,
To the placecoms, especially Apoorva and Ankit, from the core of my heart. I admire your selfless dedication to help us attain our dreams.
To Microsoft, for selecting me, ofcourse.
To my parents for being so helpful and allowing me to apply in whatever way and company I want. I still recall my conversation with my mother when I asked what company or path to take when she said, " Just ensure you are happy !! ".
To my seniors, for all the guidance and support.
To all my friends, for their constant motivation and support.
To Vaibhav Agarwal, who didn't let Vaibhav Agarwal down.
To God, to make all this happen.

Finally the awaited statement :
Summers 2017 at Microsoft.

Spring Fest 2016 Continued - Akki's Hope

... continued.

DAY 1. Spring Fest, IIT Kharagpur.

Mornings had never been warmer for the past few months. I woke up to the sun soaring above the head at around 10 am to see Anurag's door locked ( although, it is never rare ). Soon, Krish followed my suit and I got a glimpse of his bed.
He wasn't sleeping alone...!!!

He was sharing his bed with Anurag !!

Anurag had been in one of his grand- old tempo swings that night and in a rather uncanny sequence of events, dropped his room keys somewhere. Lacking a duplicate key at his disposal, he found shelter in Krishang's room; with Krishang being generally nice.
With no questions raised on the conduct of those two pious souls, we started formulating strategies to see through the crisis. Algorithms designed.. Questions asked.. Proofs shown.. Finally, the most viable option was seemingly obscure but rather straight-forward. BREAK THAT LOCK APART..!!!

Instruments were fetched. Efforts were delivered. But the lock was just like some of our esteemed professors, unyielding and adamant.
Finally, a formal application was drafted to get official help.
A pen is mightier than a sword, they said.... Well said..!!

--

The day was rather unplanned and the things I did in the afternoon are curtained ( not to be confused with, censored ) to comply with the code of conduct during fests. Shrey and later, Madhav are better candidates to help understand the scenario.

In all, the entertaining day interspersed with specks of enlightenment was quick to get over and I found myself back to the same place, same time and with the same person... yes, Akki.

Me : Its SF buddy !!!  You ?  At room ?  This early ?
Wasn't it supposed to be the greatest eve of your rather uneventful life ??

Akki was quiet.
His always- brimming glass of optimism seemed to be empty.
His eyes were drier than the Atacama.
The body was tarnished with invisible blots of fatigue and despair.

He didn't say anything further still. Just passed his lappy towards me...

I was shocked to see what I saw. Not just because it was something really intriguing, but also something that is officially and legally banned in several countries.

With trembling hands and gasping breath, I read it aloud - "HEIL HITLER" !!!

... And then I saw Akki in tears...

The hope was certainly and truly dead...!!

DAY 2 - Spring Fest IIT Kharagpur

A good and deep night sleep is instrumental in shaping your day ahead.
I had enjoyed my share of sleep to a better extent that my compatriot and friend, Akki.
Feeling sorry for his broken heart and my inability to provide him much needed consolation the other night, I invited him for a game of CounterStrike. Krishang was quick to create a server and soon, there were 5 players around.
That was an honestly fantabulous investment and the best thing to happen in SF till then (for all except Anurag, ofcourse ).

Evening found me compensating for my pre-prediction crime; I had the responsibility to make Akki enjoy SF without confronting him to girls. That was difficult, but the fact that there were so many non-core SF events which were truly entertaining as well.

Take stand-up comedy for an example.
It is not about jokes.. But all about some random guy with just one motive viz., try to show how stupid he is or how fucking unfortunate things happened to him.
How to do that ?
Well you just need to ask, just take some selling story and fit yourselves in it..
/* Oh wait !  I now realize wtf is this blog seriously...:P */

But those are actually the things which make you feel better.
You get someone whose life is more complicated than you.
And that person still has the courage to confront the audience who has come just to laugh at him.

Such were my thoughts when we reached Kalidas Audi, but to my utter disappointment, other people had greater and more-urgent issues in life as the thousand capacity auditorium was filled completely with people arriving before time.
/* "before time". Reminds me of something...   "Maggu" was it..??  Yeah. */

So, finally that dejection brought us back to the arena.
Arena was resonating with loud music and there was absolutely no reason to hold back.
There were people with whom I danced.
There were songs..
There was food..
All in all, the only thing I remember after 3 hours or so was how exhausted I was.
And the only thing I thought, how to get back to safe haven. ?

Walking along the Schols Ave had never been more solitary and tiring.

And the rest is present.
The reason why I stayed out of SF and wrote this blog.
Perpz was my motivation, seriously of all things...:/

Akki is really de-motivated as of now. The dance hasn't made him any better.
Krishang is coding.
Legend has it that Anurag's room is still locked.
Pate has been unheard of all this while.
Baba Bhagwat is on a higher level of abstraction that this... ( See his FB page "Being Bhagwat" for insights ).
That's all from this side of the campus.

Signing off with love for SF,
Vaibhav :P                (as if you didn't knew all this while)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PS- "Hope" is a great impact-factor. Just because it is being depicted as a factor in the losing side here, doesn't mean it always does end up there.
Hope can move mountains. That's my precise philosophy on it.

PPS- SF is not just about this sadist stuff. If you are genuinely interested in having quality time, it is a golden opportunity. Kudos to the organizers for such a treat.

Disclaimer -
1. No Akki's were hurt during this process.
2. The department was dirtied and washed countably infinite times since SF began.
3. KRSSG rocks, always.  #Gymk_entry :P

Waiting "Hoping" for the best on the last day of SF !!!

Good Night !
.

..
For Akhil, Gute Nacht :P !!

Spring Fest 2016

Location : Somewhere in MS hall.
Date : The date when our first and last Software Engineering Lab took place... :P

Akki : This SF is gonna be the best ever !!
Watch me attend the dance workshop with a girl..;)

Me : " Pyaar Mohabbat Dhoka Hai... Code karle beta mauka hai..."
I just can't understand your immense lust. You waste considerable amount of time on tinder and
omegle, but to NO upbeat result. You know, 2 pages of "Mein Kampf" twice daily can certainly
improve your motivation and kill any molecule of love bacteria breeding in you...!!!

Akki : You talk shit.. Rubbish.. "Me Kam.." or whatever it is, is applicable only to hard-core nerds.
I am a highly- developed, power- beamed, blessed and high- functioning STUD !!
The love I carry in my heart is enough to even melt away Hitler !
You gotta watch me roll on the eve of Spring Fest. This SF is gonna be the best ever !!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I begin this illustrious tale of immense HOPE and motivation, just like the season's wrath decomposing into the gleam of a new growth, Spring.
Spring Fest, the largest Techno-management...
Oh ! Excuse me...
Spring Fest, the largest cultural fest in Asia...
Wait !
What's Mood-I then ??
Let me play it safe..
Spring Fest, the largest cultural fest in Eastern, Central, Northern and Southern India, is a time for rejoice for all people crushed severely under the hammer of engineering at just another one of its numerous concentration camps, IIT Kharagpur. Although not obligatory, people leave their worries at their halls and Nalanda Complex and step out to delve into the mystic world of immense cultural opportunities.
Legend has it that no maggu ever steppeth out of thy wormhole, but nevertheless, the halls seem desolated except for the occasional retreat of perpetrators of moral crime and innocents seemingly distressed and broken from fatigue and exhaustion, just like I am today..:P

--

It was evening.
A rather cooler one.
Opportunists found it obligatory to frequent passes through and around the SF registration desk where a multitude was gathered.
Ironically, I and Vaishal had a chore at hand. The Switching Lab assignment had been terribly undone and as a consequence, we had to spend that day at the Switching Lab, just adjacent to the lush and decorated SF arena. Still not able to fix the fuzz, we stepped out rather broken and disappointed.
We made out way to our halls, amidst crowds gathered with HOPE in their eyes; hope for the next 3 days to come.

That very evening saw us preparing for the "wonderland" ourselves. Anurag, my team-mate and neighbor, had witnessed the excitement of Akki, the formerly introduced stud, and Krish, my other neighbor, for the Day 0 action.
It wasn't until we were sufficiently late and hopes to even get a seat in TOAT were demolished, we made off for the destination. Regulatory gate-checks and greetings saw us finally enter the theatre full with teeming millions of India, metaphorically, except ofcourse for the fact that the gender ratio was severely skewed...:P
We made off to the top tier and descended the stairways just close to the hut and occupied a seat (a rather rare one though), but with the payoff that the view of the stage was somewhat obscured. "Somewhat" it was, and hence, certainly better than standing. We were later joined by Tejas, my buddy, and saw the event take a scarcely entertaining start. The DJ was certainly what we had expected (ofcourse we had the schedule) but not what we actually expected, as in, the quality.
But it wasn't long that our buddies were met and the department was reunited inside the theatre. Conversations began.. Laughs escalated.. And attention was more on the fairer sex just alongside us rather than the stage. But soon, the shit on the stage elevated to some respectable levels and we found us witnessing an Assamese song festival live.
Ankit, the star from Assam, was fetched and dance commenced. People had little worries in life but they were certainly forgotten in the immediate air of excitement and fest. It was only after the curtains were drawn that we hopped out of the arena for dinner. But in some of us, the hunger was not only for food... Akki was one of them.
The grass hungry people left soon afterwards never to be seen again and the food-hungry ones gathered just later at the Gymk. Heads were counted, arrangements made, rules pronounced, privileges granted and soon we were in midst of the entertaining and capturing game of Mafia.
It wasn't until 2 am that we agreed to part ways, just to meet again on the same date.

--

Again, MS Hall.

Me : Ground gained, brother ??

Akki : Negate that. But we came really close to our aim. Tomorrow is that night. Tomorrow will I
be officially proclaimed the King of Tangerine Valleys of Love. Thou shall'th cede thy
knowledge of history in my foot as I'll show Hitler the power of one-sided love..

Me : All the best buddy for your endeavors. There'll be none more happy than me if you succeed..
( to myself ) Oh watchful protector, mind this lad... I don't see it end well any soon.
        Gute Nacht freund.

Akki : I don't even formally know English... WTF was that..

Me : German. And mind you, it was intentional..!!!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Its all about Feelings... A CASE STUDY.

Sophomore Saga

A CASE-STUDY
Its all about Feelings...

It has, undoubtedly, been long since I last saw this text editor.
Well if I go on to the extent of reinvigorating my memory, or more suitably, viewing my past blog posts, my last composed thing came up here on the web, a staggering, 3 months ago... //gasp
Now the only way not to make it 4 or 5 months, is, obviously,  to do the honors RIGHT NOW...

So here am I, back again, with a frivolous description of an, otherwise, significant and pressing escapades and undertakings of the new semester (count it as THIRD), which distinctly holds the privilege of being my first semester as a sophomore... // oh yeah..!!!

I'll modulate this extensive task for the sake of brevity and understanding.
Here I go:

switch (feels)                  // cases without a "break"... 'cause we definitely felt all of those..
{
        case(1):  DETACHED !!!
LBS was the nerve center for all activities in KGP. All activities, of all sorts around, needs junta (or rather, laborers). And I'm pleased /* society wala */ to say LBS supplies that in abundance. "Over-enthusiastic freshers" are the only reason why KGP looks inhabited. Had it not been for the fachhas, there'd be no stupid freshers intro seminars (actually a relief), no fests, and literally, no workforce in societies; in short, KGP-life would be short-circuited, converting it to linear circuit where effort -> desired result, short-circuiting the non-linear and enormously energy consuming extra-curriculars element.. //had life been so simple.
But this section is not intended for these student associations, absolutely not.
It reads "Detached" (in bold and caps), which certainly doesn't imply directly to the text above-mentioned. Well that all was just a prelude to what's to come up.

Detachment was the result of the least-awaited and "severely-ill-timed" HMC doc pertaining to hall allotments.
"I-ll timed".???
Well if a life-altering announcement is enforced on you while you sit perplexed and intimidated, staring into the terribly heavy, voluminous, and "angry" book ( -Jain & I-"anger"), aware of the zero-output capability of yours the very next day in the examination hall, you better not ask this question..:P
But, honors had to be done and with extreme disregard for student mentality and mindset, the decision remained unchanged and the doc flashed up on the screens of our dust-ridden laptops.
The result.
EMOTIONS.!!!
Emotions all around...
Jubilance of being allotted the most-favored hall... or, sheer disappointment in the anti-situation..
Elated to have the entire friend circle out together again... or conversely, sulk in the moment of detachment..

There were emotions...

Had I possessed in myself, a bleak glimpse of some great poet, words in rhythm would have aptly decorated the scenario on paper.
But sadly for the world, that was not to be.. and hence, here we are.. 'Writing' and 'Reading' this stuff some 5 irrelevant months after the scene of action.

Naturally, the feelings won't be similar; nonetheless, the effort won't go in vain when I'll say those feelings were short-lived, as people remarkably found solace in their tryst with hall-life as most of them settled content-and-happy (//ahem ahem), while the rebellious ones had the courage to move ahead and grab the privilege of attending the OP seminars in 2 halls... (//Brought to you by HallC. , Courtesy- HMC .)

But, what we all definitely missed was the abode of close to a quarter junta in the campus (aka, LBS). And hence, theoretically, DETACHED.!!!

case(2): Life in a Senior Hall..       (excluding rightfully, those 80 odd people in LBS)
Returning back from home, KGP seemed to have gone irrational. The most-ordered sense of life that existed back in the days of LBS, seemed to be quite distant from reality. There was commotion and chaos, distress and disorder of the highest level. People frantically shifting homes, rooms being cleaned (that was for those who atleast got a room :P), people struggling for room keys from past occupants, no order in the mess, etc etc were just some highlights of the first fortnight in the campus.
A vagabond of LLR residing in RK or some nomadic PAN Loop-ians appreciating the likes of LBS, was a common scene. There were rooms, severely oppressed, which were supporting about 4-5 times of its qualified ability to contain humans.. I wonder, had these rooms had tongues, they would have been a gem of a replacement of an angry senior during OP sessions...   #Curses

But for the well-settled lot, life was undeniably better..
The freedom from LBS Mess, arguably the biggest goal of every fresher in KGP, was met by close to 99% of the junta. The life of a sophomore suited people well. The aspiration to be an engineer was finally realized as junk courses in first year (designed only for some people) gave way to serious departmental courses.. Faith was restored in JOCSAP Seat Allocation as finally people got to study what they came to study for...
In short, there was finally some essence of IIT.

Back to serious grounds...
Despite all these, there was ONE underlying and Pivotal reason why many people cursed their life the way it was...
Lets move ahead. Next Case.

// Disclaimer: Based on Hypothesis (CS Guys should fall in love with this word. -AM) and creativity of the writer. Readers' discretion is necessary and recommended. This case bears no resemblance to any thing/case/practice whatsoever and it would be purely coincidental if it indeed does.

         case (3):  Terror !!
The gloomy shades clearly symbolized the arrival of terror. Surely crude and concentrated enough to seep "beyond the woods" and beat the hell out of Count Dracula as he lay marinated in disillusion in his secluded room in Transylvania, asking his friend and partner-in-crime (quite literally) Frankenstein to lock his room gates from the outside. Frankenstein, would be found in a hazy state in the library some hours later only to return by midnight just to make way for his friend Dracula to come out and loo. Their commander and chief of the wing, Ravana was a tougher (or rather, ill-fated) guy and had to attend the scene of terror quite regularly..
But quite literally, if Count Dracula or Frankenstein would ever be spotted in public, they would be rightfully rewarded..
The scene of terror was never actually found...

}
.......             //some arbit stuff here to comply with global syntax.

Thus, was a summary of life, in short, of the first month as a sophomore.
Further events would be aptly and judiciously reported in the future works.

The Inexplicable-Summers Documented #1

The Inexplicable-Summers Documented take that

An Encounter with THE Language

Act I
Scene 1

Place: D424
Starring, besides the narrator: Kunal Singh, Pranjal Shankhdhar
Featuring: Vaishal Shah, Mr. Wole Soyinka

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Me: Oh mate just check this joke out..!!!!
        Absolutely Hilarious...

Kunal (his ecstatic roomie) makes a move and approaches the laptop screen wide opened on the lap of a to-be sophomore, engrossed in deep thought of a noble problem of Maths before encountering this nasty joke.

Kunal: I couldn't get it bro... Maybe... errr.... Nopes buddy...:(
Me: (in a typical North Indian accent)  Arre bhai, dhang se dekh usko... You're missing
        something really cool...
Kunal: Lemme guess... Ummm....
Me: Dude, makha diye tum....

Then in a tone of understanding and rendering a portrait of nurturing a young bud, I gave him some quick missing links he (understandably) missed and then, he was clever enough to reach to the core of the joke.

Kunal: Damn awesome man... The best I've heard in days...
Me: You bet buddy....;)

"Figuring out a flaw in yourselves is a quality of yours."  But the absolute problem is that although you are relatively a different personality (in terms of accessing yourselves better), but on an absolute scale, you more or less remain the same (Remember, -1 adding to +1 gives zero).
Kunal took back the move and found his way back to his much coveted pillow-covered, screen-guard-coated laptop (some influence of literature, remember: The Telephone Conversation, W. Soyinka) and remained in his seat for an indeterminable time, so much so that he is expected to get up only the next morning.
Did I forget to mention the time of the events, well take that clue: Its 02:30 am (8th May 2015).

Me: Lets see what you got next... Umm... Well, there's a team meet next day and a whole lot of
work to be done before that. SQL and stuff. Lets get some basic brushing done and dusted
       before moving to actual challenges.

With mind set on ambition and foot on a table, I stepped up to excavate my old school textbook (mind you, its not old-school, its "old" and "school" as 2 different adjectives) on Computer Science dealing with SQL. After spending the next 15-20 min on basic reading, I came back where I was, the hub of all activities, FB. (Vaishal's gonna troll me after reading this).

Suddenly, I received a message.
It was Pranjal, the algorithmic-bug of our batch. His philosophy: ' I don't always come out of hibernation, but when I do, I make sure that CodeChef's Long Challenge is nearby.'
Pranjal was quick to jump to topics of interest.

Pranjal: Brainf**k padhi hai...???
Me: Why would I..???

But I knew there was more thought than words in that reply of mine.
Why was this friend of mine, obsessed with C++, now suddenly interested in a much-lesser known and celebrated language.???

The language's history is  so gloomy, that its creator was fined to type an apology in the same language he created for breaking laws regarding ethical naming of scientific terminology, but the ball's in favor of the nomenclature when I say that the language is indeed, mindf**king...

Then I remembered, one fine day, in the first semester of college, I came across some stupid question on SPOJ which dealt only in esoteric programming languages. Brainf**k was one of them.
So, maybe, the next hint from Pranjal will enlighten me further.

Pranjal was equally well-poised for a reply.

Pranjal: Got a problem on SPOJ dealing with the above-mentioned... Care to examine it.???
Me: Sort of anticipating that...:P
        Nopes bro, nahi padhi hai...:(
Pranjal: Just compute something there. I can just print stuff. Things getting complicated on                      Brainf**k.
Me: Truly enough, I have little clue as to what you're talking about.

With that, we officially ended the talk meaning sense and then hopped onto general chat and issues. But I knew, I just got the way to spend the night before I sleep. I wanted to be Brainf**k-ed....

After disconnecting the nasty thing, FB, I tuned onto learning the language and made a certain progress. I even tried my hand at some indigenous practice and fared quite well in preliminary understanding.
The language is not much. 8 commands. Yes. 8. And that's it. All things need to be sorted out in 8 single-character commands.
(Audience might be checking the thing out now... Do it quickly and be back here. Though, there's not much left.)

The language was teasing. Exemplary of how we can create massive chunks of code with few and limited syntax and rules. This is the new era of programming. This is what it all bottles down to.... A short and simple language with no strings attached to it and much to discover and explore is what every coder dreams of...

Made my day...

Every cause to remember the name, Brainf**k it is...
(And you know how to pronounce it...;) )

HAPPY HOLIDAYS..!!!!

Calcutta Trip.....#1

//Post end-sems.....:)
Finally, we left the clouds of uncertainty back and once again regained the much-required solace after end-sems.
This was the time to witness the most PEACEful environment for the Physics Sem guys in Kharagpur. We could feel the air, the moment and the freedom. The Chemistry Sem guys were looking extremely devastated by their fate (ET ahead).
In such a scenario, we decided to fulfill our plan to watch the Christopher Nolan classic, 'Interstellar'. This wasn't possible in Kharagpur, Calcutta obviously.
//The plan....
With such thoughts in mind, Kushagra, aka Kush (the fun-loving Delhiite) approached the room of action, D-102. Parth lay in his iconic and trademark style (not sure if I should call it 'style') while Nishant lay scrambling for another novel in his much-celebrated collection. Vaishal couldn't really recover from the aftermath of losing a lump-sum of 2 marks in his latest exam. In such an environment, Kush emerged from nowhere and demanded the duo to leave for Calcutta at the earliest, while Parth, being a Chem-Sem guy, being left out.
Meanwhile we all arrived and the message quickly spread over to me, Vraj, Yajat and Tejas.
Me and Tejas had earlier found out that no tickets remained for the INOX cinema hall at Salt Lake from some sources. So, we denied going uselessly to Calcutta.
//Snap goes the plan....
But,

//The reassurance....
But, due to some really active work by Parth, we soon found out that most theatres in Calcutta ran almost empty. The mood soon picked up and we decided to make haste. We soon had our lunch at the mess and quickly proceeded to the gate. We picked our cab and hurried to the Kharagpur Station.
The former longest railway platform in the world welcomed us all. We had all arrangements made for the journey and quickly went to catch the 2:00 train. We got into the local (my first ride in a local train), and soon we were off on our journey to Howrah.

//Journey begins
We soon became bored by sitting and decided to engage in some sort of activity. We started playing many games and had many great and convincing talks with each other. After the much exciting and memorable journey, we finally reached Howrah at 5:30.
Howrah, the enormous station (infact the largest railway station complex in the nation), welcomed us to the 'City of Joy' -Kolkata.
We had the intents set but didn't know how to get going. We roamed aimlessly for many quarto-hours ("my invention"- blocks of time interval of 15 min. duration) and finally decided to take a cab to the nearest mall in the hope of catching the 7:30 show. But, unfortunately the traffic dissuaded us from doing so and we reached well after the speculated time.

//The mall
The Forum Mall housed the INOX, the place where the scene of action was to take place. We took our tickets for the next show at 10:30 and went to roam in the area. Located in the posh area of Calcutta, Camac Street, the mall was really a delight to watch. Excuse its size, everything else was wonderful.

But we had a mammoth task ahead. We had to burn some 2 - 2.5 hours of our time and we were literally without an idea. We had to first feed ourselves.
This was actually already premeditated that Nishant would be giving his Birthday Treat to us. So, we decided to merge the occasion and have a great dinner. We decided to reach somewhere where we could feed ourselves at Nishant's cost. We were lucky to find some location some 2-3 kms behind the mall. So, we took the city bus (fabulous ride, I must admit) and reached the expected place. After the short excursion-seeming trip, we ended up basking near Park Street.
Ambitious of a grand party and theoretically founding us at an awesome place excited us. We rushed into the Pizza Hut parlor in the vicinity and had a delightful dinner. (Ended up making the waitress uncomfortable...ahem ahem, Lad you exceed yourselves...)

After having a hearty meal, we had a greater task at hand (or maybe "at foot"). Having no cabs or buses nearby, we had to walk up the distance we had initially tread on wheels. In short, we had to clean our own created mess and reach the hall (cinema hall, not LBS. Bitch Please !) on time. The distance: 4 km, maybe (I forgot to carry my magnetotronic, ultra-hyper-induction-coiled distance meter with me which was actually my fantasy. But being a geographer, was quick to jump to clues.) And the time, some couple of quarters of an hour.
Walking aimfully on aimless and metalled roads had never been as fun. Nishant was really slow and we would have made it in half the time had Nishant offered for a lift on Vraj. But Vraj never proposed for it and hence, we had to walk it off.
Reaching the place some 5-10 min ahead of time under given circumstances was enough reason to qualify this act of us on our CVs.

Then it began. INTERSTELLAR.
Frantic, Heart-soothing, Nerve-rattling, puzzling and possibly teasing us IITians to learn such quality of science, the movie was indeed, fantabulous.
We walked off marinated in the ocean of knowledge and emotion.
Hopeful we were of experiencing a classsic, but such levels were undreamed of in this part of the world.
In short, movie raapchik thi bidu....

This was followed by our haste when we conjectured that the last locals leaves at 02:30 and we have 01:45 on the clock.
We rushed into one cab (lucky we were to fit in) and reached Howrah.
We broke a law there and were all set to break another one.
Without tickets we crept into the ready-to-move KGPian local and found us expecting KGP at 05:30 in the morning. Lad, Vaishal, Nishant, Vraj etc made themselves comfortable and slept.
We reached our home-de-jure, LBS by 06:00, content and most importantly, half-asleep.

Without thinking much, we crept towards our beds, inside the blankets and had a cozy and decent sleep.
This marked an official end to our trip.  //Jo_bhi_hua_,_achha_hua

We were now prepared to face the blazing guns of the Robotix Winter Workshop.

So, without much delay, I end it up here with a bonus for all readers.
Note that, it has nothing to do with the above shit.

FRIENDS Saga

Prelude:
"I write this blog willfully, religiously, cautiously, in a fully conscious self state and in an extremely high quantity of emotion in me (Not to be confused with something related to Testosterone).
The spring semester 2014-15 has drawn to an end, and this certainly is proportionally equivalent to the end of my first year as a college student (I'm growing up fast, hehe).
So, I share this unique credit with myself to post some of the greatest and most memorable instances of my first year as an undergrad. A blog aimed to remarkably quote down the remarkable instances of a remarkable year in a remarkable place. (No remarks from now on, I assure)
HOPE YOU'LL ENJOY.

But, before I get going, some basic fixes:
int Emotional_Line=0;

OK Done. :)
Here I go.
The journey of life takes another turn. The much-favored and savored path followed till then has ceased to be material.
What remains at hand is the essence of sand moved by and winds blown across. But what remains at heart are the numerous incredible and indelible memories and instances which are unique to themselves and most importantly the awesome people who made these moments even more special. These memories are so much so that I am highly emotional while writing (or favorably, typing) this. Hope we'll stay together for a lifetime. {Emotional_Line++}

This blog serves a purpose to describe the fabulous and prodigious friends (for a lifetime) {Emotional_Line++} and I'll possibly jot down the spectacular memories and reminiscences in another one.

So, the blog theoretically, figuratively, hopefully, and in all such other figures (except "practically") belongs to the fab junta of IITKgp.   {Emotional_Line++}

I've known people.
I've known people incredibly talented and exquisitely wonderful, so much so that it would be an staggering fail to keep them out of this blog.
My blog will grow voluminous due to these people.

Note- I'll keep on adding more info and keep the blog dynamic and ever expanding.

Keeping the business manageable and organised, I'll hereby declare some categorizations on which I'll segregate each mate of mine.

  • Home-town friends. #Jhansi
  • Section mates. #Section_12_ki_battery_charging_mei_lagi_rehti_hai (Section 11 guys would also feature here...)
  • Departmental guys. #CSE_ka_tempo_pata_nahi_high _kab_hoga
  • Society ones. (CodeClub, KRSSG, Alumni Cell, KGTS, SF etc.)
  • Wingies #D400+ (includes roomies as well, obviously).
  • FOFs (Friends of ...)

The Assignment.....#1

Hey guys.... Hola..!!
As the name suggests this blog is about assignment submission and completion and a common-room (sorry Mayank) during such times.

I would kick off with a slight deviation from the topic. This blog is composed keeping in mind the examination pressure (frustapaa) and its associated weapons of mass destruction i.e, ASSIGNMENTS....
But before, I would like to introduce many of my friends (buddies), as they would feature shortly.
So, here are some of my classmates who stood with me in this fight... (In no particular order) :
Mayank (the gamer), considered to be one of the nerds in class.. But is not....He's a cyclist....:P
Ankur (the Engineering Drawing man), the one who toils hard and is always helpful....
Ishaan (the work buddy), same dep, so same tastes....
Avi (with a -kalp), always acting at random moments...product of Encore....
Shashwat (the labbie), one of the studs of the PDS Lab.....
Harsh (one of the BAJAJs), cool as ever...fears never (//stage hamare baap ka hai)....
Upamanyu (the silent guardian), Mayank's roomie and always hangs around to help....
Aman (active and agile), Mayank's wingie... Battery Charged 24x7....

.
.

So, one fine day.... when the birds chirped on the windows of my hostel room, a short and silent message appeared on my ERP.
It read-
" The following assignment to be submitted in the next tutorial class. Links below. "
..
.
....and I knew that a day is ruined....

That was a week ago... Who does an assignment that early..???
We intended to procrastinate it......

                           ......... by a week.

.

The day before:
The hostel is silent. Owing to the Electrical Viva for Chem Sem guys... and end-sem frustapaa for all. In such a somber context, it would be hard to disbelieve that anyone hasn't yet done the assignment (except me...). But, I gathered strength and asked Mayank, with Ankur in vicinity, "Bhai, assignment kiya..???"... The reply was a negation. I was thrilled. Consequently, I further went ahead, "Shuru kiya..????" The answer baffled me.
Ankur spoke "Bhai, only four to go..."
Haha.... Troll moment for me.... I went back.
.
Coming to my room, I studied some "literature" from my Maths textbook and went to sleep after a half night-out (a term entirely suited and created by me) at 2:30 am.
.
.

The day of action:
Mornings are ever amazing here in Kharagpur and this was no different. I woke up to the sound of my alarm at 7 and found myself reluctant to leave the blanket. So, I compromised and woke finally at 9.
The course of action for the day was clear in mind. Assignment Submission.
The time of submission : 4:30 pm... (Thats the reason for this laziness)
Place: Nalanda.... (Oh God, not again)

I found myself ready to face all challenges when I first opened the assignment. It was at home. I did a bit of doodles and rough clacs and the first two questions disappeared from the "yet to-do list" in no time. Then I remembered Mayank and the adventures of my first assignment submission when the room where we copied (literally) the things from, was filled with 20 students and we completed the assignment by 5 and reached Nalanda by 5:10....

With a hope of easy, stress free and direct access to solutions, I found myself in Mayank's room after lunch at 2. Ankur and Upamanyu were already there.
I started writing and tried to do problems on my own. But those problems were too boring and we got distracted easily. This was followed by the arrival of Shashwat who had no encounter with this assignment earlier and was in a fix. We together started off as Mayank and Ankur started with their left-over questions...(yes, 4 of them).
Aman entered the room (Virus detected) with his Nexus device and after bragging about the latest features of Android L which he had just downloaded, started a music track to the amuse of all...
Suddenly, we found it our necessity to have some music in the background, and hence turned on the laptop...                                                 // ho gaya assignment.
Shashwat clearly disapproved my choice of Taylor Swift and made us switch to EDM.
This change in the tempo found us holding our heads while Shashwat clearly seemed to be proud of his choice. As a result of the consequent battle, we agreed to shut down all music and come back to the assignment.
The clock read 3.
Now we faced the tough situation. An hour and half to go and what we had was less than a dozen questions on the submission sheets. We were Screwed.!!!!

We started to analyse the time and questions left and hereby, find a suitable time-overheads ratio which never worked for us unfortunately.
Then, arrived Bajaj, and with him came the spirit of haste, the understanding of the situation.
We shut our minds and copied whatever and however we could. Meanwhile, Mayank and Ankur were still on the very same question.
Upamanyu, bored as he was, went to a carefree sleep.... Oh God, how I longed for that.!!

Then approximately by 3:45 we were at par with Mayank and Ankur and it was now we decided to find the way out. We were 4 questions short and had no time for genuine solutions. We had to copy.
Then, I suddenly remember of Ishaan and randomly called him...I found that, he had done the assignment (at least more than us), just 2 questions short.... We rushed up the stairs and ran 3 floors up and into the adjoining wing and found ourselves in Ishaan's room. Ishaan and Avi sat with manuscripts in their hands puzzled for their path ahead.
We barged in and snatched their coveted sheets and began to copy. By this time, our minds had started working and we struggled for genuine solutions. The result.??
...  By 4:15 we were just 1 question down....
.
We were tense... We were excited...
We were hopeful... We were disgusted....
.
This made Avi loose him mind and he started acting dumbly...
After this short and least-celebrated Avi performance, which made us reluctant to stop criticizing him, we knew we had a task in hand...

Finally, I took the 2 kilo textbook in my hands (a Herculean task to keep it in air) and began thinking. After a short mind-boggling, we had the solution.!!!
.
Oh man... Everyone was thrilled.
I scribbled the answer, so did the others and finally, we had it done.

Time 4:25 pm.
After publishing the final solution and everyone confirming it, we left for our rooms to get ready and start on our journey to Nalanda...

We reached at 4:45, which is still considered graceful... (remember last time we reached after 5:10).

After finishing it up, we just had one thing in mind....
MA10001, we just completed all your assignments...Yeah.!!!

#
No one will ever want to remember the day of assignment submission as it is so disgrace-inflicting and morale-discharging....
I wonder what all these guys will say when they see it on the web...
Nevertheless, its there.. they'll have to cope up with it.
#

.

But, these are the moments in college life which actually bind us.
This is the time we learn team-work and strategy.
This is the time we learn time- management and lots of such fundas...
This is the time we are truly, friends....

#FriendsForever.  #AssignmentsForever. #EndSemsFrustapaa.

See you all soon after end-sems.... :)
